B2 Role-play Buying a property

For this post, I’ve set up a role-play for my students (but here’s a copy for you). We’ve been talking about jobs around the house, advantages and disadvantages of living in certain areas and so on. So now it’s time for a role-play and ever since Cristina Cabal started ‘having fun’ 😀 with Mizou, I’ve been racking my brains out to come up with some ideas that could help my group improve their communicative skills.

In this activity you, meaning the student, are a potential property buyer and Sarah, the estate agent, will guide you through a role-play by asking you questions related to the choice of location, budget, style, etc. You must ask and answer questions, negotiate, and try to reach a final decision.

Okay, until now this sounds easy-peasy, right? Nope! I’ve added an extra challenge to this activity. You are NOT GOING TO BE YOU. Before you interact with Sarah, the estate agent, you must flip the cards below to find out who you are going to role-play. There are five different types of people, and you will have to guide your role-play according to this profile.

Person number 1

Before you start interacting with the chatbot, you must read this card to know who you are and what your needs are.

Use this information as part of the role-play, in this way the activity will be more fun and much more challenging.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Flip the card to see your role. You may write down some notes if necessary.

2. Click on the link to the chatbot. The chatbot will ask you to write a name. Do not give personal details. Just your first name is enough.

3. Wait for Sarah, the estate agent to speak to you. Her communication is in writing, but you can click on the audio file to hear her and become more familiar with the pronunciation of English words.

4. Enable your microphone and record your speech. Once you have finished speaking, send your file by pressing the send button so that Sarah can hear you.

5. Wait for her reply and answer her questions.

6. AI is amazing so all you have to do now is enjoy the opportunity to improve your speaking skill in a safe, private and encouraging environment.
