B2 Giving Opinions Related to Controversial Statements

Instead of a vocabulary or grammar post, this one has a more functional aim, which is to give an opinion.

In a classroom debate or during many of our speaking activities, my groups will say something like ‘I agree’ or ‘I don’t agree’, which is okay at the beginning of the year, but as you move on and lose shyness, other structures should come into use.

Here, not only are we going to see some alternatives for the level, but we’re also going to see some face-saving suggestions that we can use when we don’t agree with a statement.

Maybe some of you will now be wondering what ‘face-saving’ means. Well, it means to use strategies to avoid being blunt and embarrassing; that is, being tactful and diplomatic so as to avoid hurting people’s feelings or annoying them.

In this slide, you will see ways to express agreement and ways to express disagreement within the topic of health.
