Creating Immersive Role-Play Experiences in the Language Classroom: At the cinema

Planning a role-play activity in your language class? Try adding an immersive background like these rows of popcorn munchers sitting in rows, totally immersed in what might be a drama movie.

I already wrote a post of why I’m using backgrounds in my role-plays which you may want to check on the link below

Creating Immersive Role-play Experiences in the Classroom

The classroom arrangement is simple:

  • Chairs placed facing their backs to the whiteboard (notice there are two empty seats at the cinema. This is where my students will be sitting.
  • students act as cinema goers (popcorn allowed for this one!)

I use a four-minute video that includes: a soundtrack and ambient sounds of what possibly might be happening in this imaginary setting. (It’s quite a challenge to include sounds that do not prove to be too distracting and, at the same time, set the scene.)

  • speaking about film preferences
  • speaking about the latest blockbuster movie
  • speaking about the last time you went to the cinema
  • speaking about leisure preferences in general

One fun fact!

As a signal that the allotted four minutes are up, the guy in the background will actually tell the students to keep quiet!
