Creating Immersive Role-Play Experiences in the Language Classroom: Seaside Restaurant

Planning a role-play activity in your language class? Try adding an immersive background like this romantic seaside restaurant at sunset.

By adding movement and sound, the experience becomes far more immersive—and the difference in student engagement is immediate.

To help learners move away from focusing on their language performance and towards communicating within a context.

One that I plan to use this week is this seaside restaurant terrace

The classroom arrangement is simple:

  • two desks placed one in front of the other, with a detail in the middle of both desks such as a small flower pot, or an unlit candle
  • background projected behind
  • students acting as guests or even as a waiter or a waitress

I use a four-minute video that includes:soft music, gentle waves, and a relaxed atmosphere.

  • This four-minute video can be used for role-plays:
  • ordering food
  • making small talk
  • complaining
  • discuss preferences
  • suggesting dishes, you name it!
