A2/B1 What Makes You Happy & What Makes You Angry?

In this post, students will learn how to speak about situations that make them happy and situations that annoy them.

  1. To start off, look at the following illustrations.

What’s happening in each illustration?

Which situations do you think would make you happy, and which situations would make you feel angry?

2. Match each panel with a gerund

A gerund is an -ing form of a verb. We can use this form as the subject of a sentence.

Example: I feel happy when I get up early in the morning. > Getting up early in the morning makes me feel happy.

In the following activity there are gerunds for each panel. Match them to each picture.

3. Using the verb ‘make’

Maybe you noticed that in the example we used the verb make.

Example: I get angry when I am stuck in a traffic jam.> Getting stuck in a traffic jam makes me angry.

Structure:

Gerund + make(s) + object + adjective

Example:Getting stuck in a traffic jam makes me angry.

Can you change the sentences below to a sentence where there is a gerund as subject?

  • I feel happy when I spend time with my family. > …
  • I feel angry when I work until late. >…
  • I feel happy when I have a romantic dinner. > …

4. Watching a video 💥💥💥

Here’s a special treat I have prepared for you. We’re going to watch a video of where an interviewer asks people questions at Speaker’s Corner in London. Watch the video and do the listening activities. First, watch the video and after, scroll down to the listening activities.
