In Spain we have a saying that says ”Ver la botella medio llena o medio vacia” when we refer to how different people see aspects of life differently. In this I’m going to teach ‘will’ for predictions to my As and for this I have set up some new contents and I will also use a video that I created some years ago.
How to use
Step 1
First of all, we’re going to lead-in with the image of the bottle of wine. I’m going to ask my students if the bottle is half full or half empty.

Step 2
Here my students will do a personality quiz where they will find out if they are an optimist, a pessimist, or a balanced person. After the quiz, I will ask my students to speak about their results.
- Do you agree with your result? Why or why not?
Step 3
Next up is playing a video grammar lesson on “will” for predictions, featuring my husband whistling “Black Magic Woman.”
Step 4
Another video here! In this video we meet Mr Optimist. Mr Optimist is daydreaming about his holiday.
After watching the video, I ask questions related to the video. The questions are below on a flipping quiz.
Listening
Here’s a flipping card listening activity. The aim is to get familiar with ‘will’ in question forms and answering questions using ‘will’. There is more than one possible way to answer these questions, so the one on the card is mostly orientative.
Step 5
And here we have Ms. Pessimist. An extremely pessimistic young lady who is in the bad habit of foreseeing the very worst possible situations. Aim: to allow students to practice structures using ‘will’ for predictions. I put them in small groups, correct, and ask questions related to the task.

Step 6
Speaking
Here’s a fun question wheel. I love these wheels because it’s a great way to get students answering and it also gives me the opportunity to hear them and make sure they get the structures under their belts.
Step 7
Here, my students will role-play fortune telling, where they will write questions on cards and ask the fortune teller to answer their questions. And yes, in case you are asking, I bring something that looks like a crystal ball to the classroom.
