Do you like going shopping? Do you like going to the sales to look for bargains? I bet you do!
In this post you are going to hear somebody talking about something she bought at the sales. But guess what? Something went wrong.
The woman in the pictures below went to the sales. She wanted to buy a gift but something went wrong.

As we are going to use the past simple for this activity, we need to revise some English verbs. Can you remember the past simple form for the verbs below?
- go – buy – give – pay – find – say – try on (a phrasal verb here!) – see – want – take
If you want to check it out, here’s a quiz to help you.
Now write sentences in the past simple of what happened.
Write short sentences and use the verbs that you have below for each sentence. Example: 1. A woman went to the sales.
- went
- wanted
- found
- gave
- tried on
- saw
- took
- said
- bought
If you need some help on the flipping card below you can find the clues to help you start your sentences.
Did you get it right?
There is more than one way to answer, but if you flip the card below you will see one possibility.
Smoother, more A2 stories using ‘because, so and but’
Now you have the story in simple sentences.
Your task is to join them to make a smoother story.
Use:
- because → to give a reason
- but → to show a problem or contrast
- so → to show a result
Ask yourself:
- Why? → use because
- Is there a problem? → use but
- What happened as a result? → use so
In the quiz below you now have the sentences and you will choose the best connector: because, but or so.
Listening
Now you’ve done all that hard work, you are ready for the listening activity. Warning! It’s a bit difficult, but you can hear it as many times as you like.
