Creating Immersive Role-play Backgrounds: At a Street Market

This role-play background is suitable for speaking about shopping and eating habits, for example, where students usually shop and whether they ever visit local street markets.

The inspiration for this video came from a lovely visit to Kingston upon Thames, where you can spend a relaxing day wandering around, sampling food from the local market stalls and enjoying a drink at The Druid’s Head, which also appears in the video.

How to use

Give your students a prompt and ask them to write a short script. Then have them perform their role-play with their backs to the screen, facing their classmates.

Here are just a few prompts:

A1 Where do you usually buy food?

A2 Which do you prefer: a street market or a supermarket? Why?

B1 Are there any markets in your neighbourhood?

B2 How have shopping habits changed over the past few decades?

B2 Do you shop locally, or do you prefer going to shopping centres?

C1/C2 How difficult is it nowadays to buy locally produced or organically grown fresh food?
