In this post my students will do a fun activity revising vocabulary , collocations and verb tenses. They will have to add up their results and at the end of the game, they will get ‘paper money’ to spend on a holiday trip. You will find downloadable score lists at the end of this post. This is how I’ve organised the sequence of activities:
1οΈβ£ Wordsearch: Holiday Places
π Find the words connected to places you can visit on holiday or in your free time.
βοΈ Write your name on the leaderboard and write down your score on your list
Example: 12 points β 12 x 10=β¬120
Let’s begin with the wordsearch! Find words related to places you can or might go to while away on holiday. Maximum time: 10 minutesπ¨β
2οΈβ£ Collocations Quiz: go / have / get / do
A quick revision of common expressions (e.g. get sunburn, have a good time).
Students write their percentage and add it to their previous total.
3οΈβ£ Pre-Listening: Video Preview
Students watch the video once and answer three simple questions about numbers to practise skimming:
- How many public buildings in London did the video mention?
- How many museums in Madrid did the video mention?
- How many museums in CancΓΊn did the video mention?
Write your answers on the quiz below πππ
4οΈβ£ Listening: Complete the Sentences
Students watch the video again and complete the missing information.
They write their percentage and add it to the total.
Example: 60% β 60 points x 10=β¬600
5οΈβ£Verb Tenses Quiz
A final grammar task to revise present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous and going to. (these tenses have been covered so this is a great opportunity for revising).
Don’t forget to write your name on the leaderboard and to write down your score on your paper. Example: 120 β 120 points x 10=β¬1200
7οΈβ£ Spend Your Money!
With the money they have won, students choose:
- where theyβre going to stay
- how theyβre going to travel
- what theyβre going to visit
- what theyβre going to eat
- And so on.
The price list appears at the end so they can select what they can afford.
8οΈβ£ Write Your Holiday Plan (using going to)
Students write 4β6 sentences describing their holiday.
Example:
I won β¬2,300 so Iβm going to stay in a hotel with breakfast. Iβm going to visit the Tower of London and Iβm going to try some local food.
9οΈβ£ Share Your Plans with the Class
A short speaking activity where students explain what they chose and why.
Down below you will find copies for the scoreboard, the price list and the writing activity ready to slice in half (and save paper). πππ
